Captain Wayne "Bear" Brooks Jr. and Captain Augusto "Augie" Acabou
On July 5th, 2023, Firefighter Wayne "Bear" Brooks Jr., alongside his fellow firefighter Augusto "Augie" Acabou, made the ultimate sacrifice while bravely battling a fire aboard the Grande Costa d'Avorio cargo ship. The ship, carrying thousands of cars, was en route from the Port of Newark, New Jersey, to Africa. Both Bear and Augie responded to the call of duty that day, unaware it would be their final mission.
Wayne was more than a firefighter; he was a devoted husband, a loving father to his daughters Taylor and Dasia, a cherished son, and a dedicated family member. His passion for fencing was passed on to his daughters, who continued his legacy of perseverance and discipline through their high school years. This family tradition played a significant role in shaping the causes the foundation now supports.
In honor of Captain Wayne "Bear" Brooks Jr. and Captain Augusto "Augie" Acabou, Wayne's wife, Michele Brooks, established this foundation to carry forward Wayne's legacy of selflessness, generosity, and integrity. Wayne gave his life defending the oath he took as a firefighter, and through this foundation, we strive to uphold that same spirit of service.
Our foundation focuses on honoring Wayne's legacy by assisting families in Newark, NJ and surrounding NYC Metro areas affected by fires, helping with immediate needs and providing fencing scholarships to Wayne’s Alma Mater.
